unconscious states
02:30
|
|||
Written in 2020 while I was working on 1. Originally just voice and acoustic guitar. I thought it was too cute at the time and set it aside. Circled back around to it at the top of 2022 tho and did the full band arrangement. Still took me four years to release it tho
Up against the window
You fall into an unconscious state
Unconscious state
Daydream my way home
You fall into an unconscious state
Unconscious state
Didn't mean to kick you while you're down
Didn't mean to tug your heart around
I didn't mean it
But that's just what you say
Didn't mean to kick you while you're down
Didn't mean to tug your heart around
I didn't mean it
But that's just what you say
When we're driving back home
You wake up in your clothes
Unconscious state
Unconscious state
At the back of a show
You wake up in an unconscious state
Unconscious state
Didn't mean to kick you while you're down
Didn't mean to tug your heart around
I didn't mean it
But that's just what you say
Didn't mean to kick you while you're down
Didn't mean to tug your heart around
I didn't mean it
But that's just what you say
Oh la la la la la
Unconscious state
Unconscious state
Oh la la la la la
Unconscious state
Unconscious state

Sweat
03:34
|
|||
Written in 2022 while working on the followup to 3: a double album of mostly acoustic songs. Ended up losing steam on the project tho and ultimately put the concept to rest. But not before I obsessed over this song for a year, trying a million different versions with guitar overdubs, piano, and even violin--all of which I abandoned. In the end, it was Joey himself who cracked the code by lending me a box of old harmonicas. A lot of dust was ingested while tracking the harmonica parts, but I'd say it was well worth it.
Joey I wanted to call
So tired I had to crawl
I fall asleep on your couch
Whenever we hang out
I want to know
Are we still bros
Can't be undone
Cuz even apart we are one
Joey why didn't you call
Do you not miss me at all?
I miss you and I'm appalled
What came first?
Harm or hurt?
I want to know
Are we still close
Can't be undone
Cuz even apart we are one
Shake my hand
Fingers crossed behind your back
I'm still your man
And I want to see you sweat
Joey I want you to know
I love you and we're still bros
Until you're ready to go
Let's zone out to Pet Sounds
We're getting old
But we're still dope
Can't be undone
Cuz even apart we are one
Shake my hand
Fingers crossed behind your back
I'm still your man
And I want to see you sweat
I want to see you sweat
I want to see you sweat
I want to see you sweat

Sofa
03:11
|
|||
Written in 2021 while I was living near UCLA. The irony is I didn't even own a sofa at the time, just some IKEA armchair that I'd sprawl out in. So perhaps the song is more aspirational than anything. This one is lucky to see the light of day at all, since my Ableton file somehow got corrupted and refused to open. Had to turn to Reddit to find the solution and literally had to edit lines of code in order to fix the issue. Shoutout r/ableton lol
Sofa
There for me when I come home
There for me when I'm alone
Passing the time as I look at my phone
My sofa is there
Sofa
Never could make me feel pain
Never could call me no names
Never will I ever feel so ashamed
To lay on my sofa
Ba ba ba ba ba
Ba ba ba ba ba
Sunshine
Just makes me want to wear black
Just makes me want to go back
Onto my sofa and try to relax
The sunshine it is here
Old friend
I hear you're moving out soon
Under the light of the moon
I left some part of me there in your room
My old friend isn't here
Ba ba ba ba ba
Ba ba ba ba ba
Sofa
There for me when I come home
There for me when I'm alone
Passing the time as I look at my phone
My sofa is there

the opposite of ok

Written in 2021. Just a cheeky little punk song. Originally named this one "ok", but when the real song "ok" came around I renamed this one "the opposite of ok". Always thought it would be funny to have them side by side on the same album, but this flow just worked better.

John Hughes Film
03:19
|
|
||
Written in 2020 while I was gathering songs for 2. I even watched The Breakfast Club for inspo. Didn't make the cut for 2, and didn't fit the concept for 3. Ended up just releasing it as a random single, but now it's finally got a home. And name another song that name-drops Matthew Broderick as well as David Bowie!
John Hughes film, another John Hughes film
When I need something to feel good
John Hughes film, another John Hughes film
That Great American Childhood
I'm six years old
Sleepovers and 'Home Alone'
I'm freaking out
Laying traps in my own house
John Hughes film, another John Hughes film
That Great American Roadtrip
I watched another John Hughes film
From the backseat of a minivan
I'm mad about
Ferris singing "Twist And Shout"
Now I know that
Ferris was a spoiled brat
Oh save me from
This disaster I've become
Surviving on narratives that are all wrong
Obsessed with youth
Matthew Broderick wouldn't approve
Now I've convinced happy endings don't exist
John Hughes film, another John Hughes film
I used to think they were useful
John Hughes film, another John Hughes film
Cliches and family values
We'll rise above
Morals from 'The Breakfast Club'
'Saved By The Bell'
80s movies don't age well
Oh save me from
This disaster I've become
Surviving on narratives that are all wrong
Obsessed with youth
David Bowie wouldn't approve
Now I've convinced happy endings don't exist
John Hughes film, another John Hughes film
I used to think they were useful

feel like will toledo
01:09
|

Just an ode to a genius who wrote an ode to yet another genius. IYKYK. I am but a humble student of the masters who came before me, and hope my silly little songs inspire somebody one day too. Shoutout Will. Your music changed my life and helped me realize I was queer. Shoutout Daniel. Your spirit lives on in your masterful songwriting.
There's a guy who makes a living putting himself down
Helped me learn to write a song
And helped me to come out
I feel like Will Toledo
(I feel like Will Toledo)
Or is it Will Torpedo?
(Or is it Will Torpedo?)
I think it's Will Toledo
(I think it's Will Toledo)
I feel like Will Toledo
(I feel like Will Toledo)

Capri Sun
02:13
|
|||
Written in 2022. Originally called "Fess Up", this track never went anywhere until I rewrote the lyrics and refashioned it "Capri Sun". Felt like a splash of sunlight at a time when a lot of my songs were pretty glum. Fun fact, the bass is just a guitar pitched down with a pedal, and the drums are just a drum loop that came programmed on the very same pedal.
Capri Sun
Capri Sun
Capri Sun
Capri Sun
Capri Sun
Capri Sun
Capri Sun
Capri Sun
You'll be feeling so much better
And you can keep it up forever
And know the lie is always better when it's in your head
Capri Sun (Don't be sad)
Capri Sun (Don't be sad)
Capri Sun (Don't be sad)
Capri Sun (Don't be sad)
Capri Sun (Don't be sad)
Capri Sun (Don't be sad)
Capri Sun (Don't be sad)
Capri Sun (Don't be sad)
You'll be feeling so much better
And you can keep it up forever
And we can work it out together once it's off your chest
Capri Sun (Don't be sad)
Capri Sun (Don't be sad)
Capri Sun (Don't be sad)
Capri Sun (Don't be sad)
Capri Sun (Don't be sad)
Capri Sun (Don't be sad)
Capri Sun (Don't be sad)

You'll be feeling so much better
And you can keep this up forever
And we can work it out together once it's off your chest

ok
02:24
|
|||
Written in 2021. I'm super proud of this one! Kept waiting for the perf album to stick it on, but somehow it never fit the bill. Meanwhile, its lyrics were bleeding into other songs like "So Much, So Mad". Obviously the song itself was dying to be released, but as time went on it just didn't feel like a reflection of me anymore so I never put it out. UNTIL NOW!
We don't talk to that boy anymore
He's no different than the boys before
Spitting off the bridge
Will you count with me?
Thirteen seconds to reach the sea
Now I'm hunched over the kitchen sink
Turn off Revolver so I can think
Hot water always seems cold at first
My collar's all wet
And I woke up thirsty
Morning, afternoon, and after dark
You know I could be your work of art
Forgive and forget and move along
I'll still be around after you're gone
Now I'm hunched over the kitchen sink
Turn off Revolver so I can think
Hot water always seems cold at first
My collar's all wet
And I woke up thirsty
I don't really mind what they all say
All I wanna know is are we ok
All I wanna know is are we ok
All I wanna know is are we ok

tickets for the dance
02:07
|
|||
Written in 2021. Another song featuring music from another song! Repurposed Elliott Smith, repurposed Big Star, and repurposed Alex G. What can I say y'all, I wear my influences on my sleeve. Hope it encourages y'all to go listen to the masters do their holy work!
I'm alright if you wanna stay up past 2
We're the best of friends
Wake up and do it all again
Pull up at the house
Mamas minivan now
And you're coming outside
And you're shining in your eyes
At the liquor store
Fake I.D. in my hands
Taken at the door
I've got tickets for the dance
I'm alright if you wanna dance with that dude
We're the best of friends
Wake up and do it all again

Check Engine Light
04:31
|
|||
Written in 2020. Recorded in 2022. Perfected never. Still love the guitar solo though! And it's features a toy piano I bought from Goodwill for $20. And if that's not a W, then I don't know what is.
Alex didn't wake up today
He just kept on sleeping
Ceased to exist
Withdrawing from everything
The opposite of ok
That's what this is
There are no words to convey
Such revoltion
It can be so hard to explain
But I'm trying to piece it together
It's all shadow but no shade
When you're shining bright my brother
Do you remember that drive to San Fransisco
We tried to see how long we could go without talking
Twenty minutes later something broke the silence
Somehow a wasp got into the car at 80 miles per hour
Now I'm doing that drive again
All by my lonesome
And we still not talking
But I'm not laughing
And there's no wasp here with me
Keeping my company
All I have is my check engine light
It can be so hard to explain
But I'm trying to piece it together
It's all shadow but no shade
When you're shining bright my brother
Please don't get angry
Please don't get angry
Please don't get angry
Please don't get angry
Please don't get angry
Please don't get angry
Please don't get angry
Please don't get angry

This Old Brain
02:33
|
|||
Written in 2023. Return of the dusty harmonicas! I love this track, but I don't see it fitting on future YS albums, so b-sides it is. This one came so easily and naturally; it was a dream to write. Sped the track up which makes me sound like a teenager a la "When I'm Sixty Four".
This old brain doesn't work so good these days
It's been weighing down my head like novocain
It's been playing tricks on me like a string that never ends
It don't know if we're still friends
This old brain
This old brain doesn't like to stay up late
But it won't sleep when I'm working the next day
And I'm shaking so much that the screws are coming out
I'm foaming at the mouth
This old brain
This old brain likes to smoke Mary Jane
Likes to suffer some and sage it all away
It wants pain to a point
Likes to dress in corduroy
And it speaks with your voice
This old brain
